Tea and Talk: Featuring a Material History of the Holidays

It’s Tea and Talk with a special holiday focus! Raise a pinky to the season and join us for a festive three-course holiday tea and lecture by curator and historian Madeline Crispell. She will discuss the role materials such as paper, glass, wood, and wax played in Chicago holiday decorating, dining, and celebrating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and specifically at Gilded Age homes like the Nickerson Mansion in the 1880s, 1900s, and 1920s. After the tea and lecture, Madeline will teach you how to make your own historic holiday paper craft.
We will update the tea menu in the week before the event so please check back for updates. Seat preferences and dietary restrictions will be requested at the time of ticket purchase and re-confirmed the week of the event.
This event will be held in the Murphy Auditorium at 50 E. Erie. Doors open at 1:45pm.

Tickets do not include admission to the Museum.
About the Speaker:
Madeline Crispell is a historian and curator whose work focuses on the history of material culture and decorative arts. She is the Curator for the University Guild at Northwestern University and an Exhibit Curator for the Historic Pullman Foundation. Her most recent exhibition, The Art of the Miniature, on Narcissa Thorne and the craft of miniature making is open at the Lake Forest Lake Bluff History Center through March 2023.
