How is a beloved, 19th-century novel adapted into a modern ballet? A special opportunity awaits you as the Joffrey’s Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director Ashley Wheater and Choreographer Cathy Marston along with literary expert Jennifer Conary explore how choreography, stage setting, and music bring Charlotte Brontë‘s iconic Jane Eyre to life.
Cathy’s Marston’s adaptation of Brontë‘s trailblazing novel is a “quietly enthralling classic” that combines theater and dance to tell the coming-of-age story of Jane Eyre. With stirring choreography and an enthralling Victorian design, this avant-garde ballet breaks the mold of the traditional ballet heroine.
This program is presented in partnership with The Joffrey Ballet and will take place at Joffrey Tower: 10 E. Randolph St. Chicago, IL 60601

Jennifer Conary received her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California and joined DePaul University faculty in September 2008. Her research interests include Victorian literature and culture, the history of the novel, 18th- and 19th-century British women’s writing, and issues related to gender in the long 19th century. She teaches courses on British literature in the long 19th century; 19th-century Gothic; the history of romance and the novel; the British novel; major novelists such as Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, and Charles Dickens; and the contemporary coming-of-age novel.
