Materialities Installation Guidelines

Artists participating in Materialities  will produce a commissioned work specifically designed in response to an object in the collection or architectural feature of the Driehaus Museum. Before engaging in the production of the work, artists will be briefed about the history of the building. Archival materials and sources will be made available by the Museum as needed. Artists will take part in progress-meetings and brainstorm activities with other artists in order to build a, as far as possible, cohesive and meaningful body of work. The Driehaus Museum will provide a stipend and cover costs for the production and transportation of each artwork up to an amount that will soon be established. Works produced for this exhibition must be site-specific. The exhibition will take place across the Mansion rather than in one gallery, it is therefore essential that the new work integrates itself into the exhibiting environment with a sense of respect for the building and its historic and cultural value. It is, likewise, of paramount importance that artists collaborate with the curator and museum director/officials to reflect and portray the values of the institution as well as respect its health and safety protocols.

Artists selected to work on Materialities  will have to, positively and productively, engage with the potentialities and limitations entailed by the fabric of the building. This is not an opportunity to showcase existing work but it should be understood as a collaborative effort; an invitation to deeply engage with the Driehaus Museum in an intimate dialog of great creative potential.

Please email your Statement of Interest by October 15, 2023, as one PDF file not to exceed 25 MB to curator Giovanni Aloi here: galoi@driehausmuseum.org
