Chicago's Gold Coast
in the Gilded Age Walking Tour - SOLD OUT

Saturdays, September 14 - October 5, 2019

During Chicago’s Gilded Age the area’s illustrious residents banded together after the Great Fire to set the stage for the emergence of the great Midwest metropolis. Chicago’s history will come alive set against the elegant homes and beautiful landscape of the Gold Coast neighborhood in a tour led by Chicago historian Sally Kalmbach.

Please note:

  • The tour takes place offsite. Please meet at the southeast corner of Astor & Schiller (in front of the Charnley-Persky House).
  • Tour duration: Approximately 1.5 hours Distance: About 1 mile
  • Please wear sturdy and comfortable walking shoes.
  • We will be walking outside, on city streets, and through old buildings. Be prepared to encounter stairs, gravel walkways, uneven and possibly wet surfaces.
  • This tour will happen rain or shine. Please plan for umbrellas and sunscreen accordingly.
  • This tour ends offsite at Three Arts Club in Restoration Hardware.


Sally Sexton Kalmbach
is a fourth-generation Chicagoan whose family founded a Chicago-based coffee and tea company in the early 1880s, at the same time Potter Palmer was developing the Gold Coast. She has taught classes in Chicago History at the Newberry Library and gives speeches and tours on topics including Chicago’s Gold Coast, the Columbian Exposition of 1893, and prominent families of Chicago’s Gilded Age.
