Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity
Thursday, May 16, 2019
Join Curator, Shantrelle P. Lewis to discuss her groundbreaking exhibition, Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity. Lewis’ photographic work engages in a global-cultural conversation about the changing and highly-nuanced contemporary sartorial expressions of Black identity and how these representations are challenging mainstream narratives of Black masculinity across the globe. Her talk will also consider Yinka Shonibare CBE’s artistic discourse with the contemporary Dandy figure in his work.
Dandy Lion, has shown at notable institutions worldwide, including the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (Brooklyn, NY); the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture (Baltimore, MD); and Open Ateliers Zuidoost in (Amsterdam, NL), the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago) and the Museum of the African Diaspora (San Francisco). It has evolved into the most comprehensive multi-media survey of global Black Dandyism to date, serving as a platform for scholarship and academic discourse internationally. The project has evolved and broadened to embrace trans, queer, and masculine-of-center identities.
