Private Opening Reception for Capturing Louis Sullivan: Members Only SOLD OUT!

Thursday, August 25, 2022

Join us for a preview reception of Capturing Sullivan: What Richard Nickel Saw, which presents the Chicago architecture of Adler & Sullivan from 1880 to 1894, the period parallel to the emergence of the historically and architecturally significant Nickerson Mansion from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire. The exquisite ornament of these buildings will be seen through the lens of photographer and preservationist Richard Nickel and the fragments he saved. Nickel’s shared passion for Sullivan’s architecture and design philosophy ultimately cost him his life; 50 years ago he died salvaging fragments from the Chicago Stock Exchange.

Each gallery will be focused on specific Adler & Sullivan’s residential and commercial work, including the Chicago Stock Exchange, and the stories of their attempted rescue and salvage. The exhibition will explore Sullivan’s idea that architecture is powerful with emotion, human connection, and the energy of nature.
