“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”
– Henry James
Please join us this Mother’s Day Weekend as we discuss a wonderful tradition that dates back to 1840 British royalty and quickly began to take root with people of all social classes - the afternoon tea. Put on the kettle and plate your favorite finger sandwich or scone for an experience fit for a Dutchess (or your mother!)
Leslie Goddard, Ph.D. explores the history and luxurious artistry of afternoon tea. How and when did the custom of enjoying tea in the late afternoon begin? Why was afternoon tea so important for the Edwardians in particular? And do you really have to hold your “pinkies up”? Learn the correct tea etiquette, what a proper menu included, and why the custom of afternoon tea remains so enduringly appealing.

Enjoy your afternoon tea at home with teapots, tea towels and more - available through the online Museum Store!
