About Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO)

With a rich history dating to 1946, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (CYSO) has grown from one orchestra to a comprehensive music training program for over 600 students ages 6-18 participating in symphony orchestras, string orchestras, jazz orchestra, and steelpan orchestras, as well as chamber music and composition programs and invests in community with its in-school CYSO@CPS programming and free concerts that reach more than 10,000 young people annually. CYSO is committed to educating, encouraging, and empowering each young musician so that they may pursue personal excellence both on and off the stage.

About Classical Orchestral Repertory Ensemble (CORE)

Critically acclaimed by The San Francisco Chronicle as “alarmingly skilled players” and by both the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times for “professional-level” performances, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras’ (CYSO) flagship Symphony Orchestra––comprised of young musicians of ages 14 to 18––performs each season in the heart of Chicago at Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center. Its alumni now play in many major orchestras worldwide including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The orchestra will embark on its 17th international tour to Spain this season.

Select musicians from the Symphony Orchestra form CYSO’s most advanced chamber orchestra, Classical Orchestral Repertory Ensemble (CORE), which performs works from the classical period from Hadyn to Brahms. This season the orchestra will record the latest Classical Kids Live! show, Saint-Georges’ Sword & Bow, which celebrates the work and life of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a French violinist, conductor, composer, and fencer who was a contemporary of Mozart. CYSO is the only youth orchestra program to record demos for the highly acclaimed Classical Kids Live! series of productions for professional orchestra family and education concerts.
