Concert Performance
Third Wednesday: Tempero Brasileiro
Wednesday, June 18, 2025, 2025
Duo Tempero Brasileiro will present a varied program of works for flute and guitar from Brazil and Argentina.
Pieces from Argentine composers Astor Piazzolla (Movement I of Histoire du Tango) and the lesser-known Máximo Diego Pujol (Suite Buenos Aires) will be contrasted with Algodão Doce and Sambossa from Brazilian-born, Canadian resident, multi-instrumentalist Celso Machado.
The remainder of the program will highlight the genre of music which initially inspired the duo’s formation: choro from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Selections from these giants of choro composition will be performed: Ernesto Nazareth, Jacob do Bandolim, Pixinguinha, Waldir Azevedo, and Baden Powell. Finally, a brand-new arrangement of the internationally known “The Girl from Ipanema” will be premiered.
About the Performers
Tempero Brasileiro is a Brazilian music flute and guitar duo performing choro, samba and other Brazilian popular musics. “Tempero Brasileiro” means “Brazilian seasoning/flavor” and reflects the duo’s diverse background of classical (Julie Koidin) and jazz (Neal Alger) which they add to their long background in Brazilian genres. They “season” their selections with a sprinkle of classical and a pinch of jazz for a tasty offering!
Neal Alger is one of the most versatile guitarists in the Chicago area and Julie Koidin is one of the few Brazilian choro specialists in the U.S. with a nationally broadcast radio show on the WFMT Network – “A Joyful Cry: Brazil’s Choro Music.”
